I Need Your Help!

Like Dr. Stiltner said in his comment to one of my posts, I would love comments from the class about fast food. How much fast food do you? Why do you eat fast food? Just in general what are your thoughts about fast food? You can post whatever you want me to know about fast food. I would really appreciate it! Thanks! =)

  1. I think fast food has really become a 'comfortable' practice for Americans. It is easy to think their children are getting the necessary nutrients because they are giving them the healthier version of the happy meal with a burger apple slices and milk, but the truth is that it is far from that. This is an issue that is much deeper than just a practice, it has become a lifestyle. I think in order to change that it becomes necessary to change the fast food industry itself, perhaps with regulations that force them to serve food that is of a certain quality, or the introduction of healthier places, for instance Saladworks is a quick way to get a healthy meal. Of course it is possible to make that healthy meal unhealthy, but that rests upon the indvidual persons decision of what to eat. I personally am driven away from the industry as a result of our meat packing industry in the United States. I cannot bring myself to consume meat not knowing where it came from, the processing it went through and what is in it. That is a rareity though of course because most people understand that it is easier to just eat what they can because it is convenient or easy at the time. I am really excited to read your paper and see how it comes out based on these opinions and information about the industry itself! I like your passion and interest!

  2. I agree with the previous comment. It is definitely easier for families to succumb to fast food just because it's readily available everywhere they turn. Another aspect that is important to take into account is the cost of fast food. In general fast food is not only more available but, also cheaper. For example, at our school store, Outlakes, I've bought cups of fruit that are about five dollars. On the other hand, a candy bar or a bag of chips sells for as low as one dollar. A family shopping at a grocery store may find it more cost-efficient to buy the bag of chips than the fruit. We may need to find ways to make healthier food more accessible to families by giving them more options like Mellissa suggests.

  3. I try not to eat fast food, but sometimes it is really convenient. For instance, when traveling on road trips, it is easier to make a quick stop at a fast food restaurant than to have a meal (it's also probably easier to pack some sandwiches, but that's beside the point). I don't particularly like fast food, except for treats (like the McFlurry or the Smoothies/frosties/blizzards). I really only eat it when I have to, probably less than a couple times a month. I think a lot of people eat fast food for the convenience. It's also really easy for kids--what child objects to chicken fingers and fries? And everybody can get what they want.
